GOVERNMENT has reaffirmed its commitment to using sport as a vehicle for youth empowerment, social cohesion and economic development, with Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Albert Nguluvhe saying football helps instil values that build stronger communities.
Minister Nguluvhe, who was the guest of honour at the Dulivhadzimu United FC 2026 Annual General Meeting held on Saturday at Canvas Corner in Beitbridge, said the club’s impact extends far beyond results on the pitch, contributing to community development and youth empowerment.
“Dulivhadzimu United FC is much more than a football club. It is a source of hope, unity and pride for the people of Beitbridge,” he said.
“It provides young people with opportunities to develop their talents, build discipline and pursue their dreams.”
He told members that the Government recognises sport as a powerful vehicle for youth empowerment, social cohesion, economic development and nation building.
“Football teaches discipline, teamwork, resilience, respect and leadership. These are the same values that build successful communities and productive citizens,” he said.
“Today’s community footballers are tomorrow’s Warriors, Mighty Warriors and national heroes. It is therefore our collective responsibility to invest in their future.”
The AGM was held under the theme “Together We Build; Together We Rise”. It brought together ZIFA and Central Region Soccer League representatives, traditional leaders, sponsors, players, coaches and supporters.
Minister Nguluvhe also challenged the club to lead in the fight against drug and substance abuse among youth.
He also pledged to pay gate fees for 50 vulnerable supporters during every home game until the end of the 2026 season.
The minister also pledged to mobilise more support for the team to ensure it runs smoothly and eventually gets promotion into the Premier Soccer League.
“Sport remains one of the most effective tools in preventing drug and substance abuse. When young people are actively involved in football, they develop discipline, confidence, purpose and positive friendships that keep them away from harmful influences,” said Minister Nguluvhe.
He urged the club to carry the message: “Choose Sport. Choose Life. Say No to Drugs.”
Minister Nguluvhe said the elected leaders should remain guided by service, accountability and integrity.
He said leadership was not about positions or titles; it is about service.
“To those elected today, lead with humility and commitment. Build strong partnerships and always keep the welfare of players and supporters at heart,” he said.
Outgoing chairman Christian Magwali, in remarks delivered before elections by his deputy Rex Mphisa, gave an account of the 2025 season.
He said the team started slowly due to poor pre-season planning but improved after bringing in experienced coach Rutherford Matondo.
Magwali also highlighted that a mid-season player exodus and the coach’s departure to Hardrock FC saw form dip, but Dulivhadzimu still managed a top eight finish in the Central Region Soccer League.
He also thanked the Municipality of Beitbridge for fuel support, SEBATA GROUP for kits and tracksuits, and sponsors including Southern Aqua, Xpress Sunshine Logistics and Pachikomo Investments among others.
“We fulfilled all fixtures despite harsh economic challenges. Our identity is built on community, player growth and shared values, not just shorelines,” he said.
In his acceptance remarks, incoming Chairman Chris Kaurimbo said the new executive’s target is to maintain momentum and avoid relegation this season while building on the foundation laid by the previous committee.
“Some of our strategic goals include securing new sponsorship and expanding grassroots youth development,” he added.
Beitbridge Mayor Councillor Pirato Mafuta said the local authority will continue supporting Dulivhadzimu United FC, which remains one of Beitbridge’s flagship community sporting institutions.
