Government is engaging local and foreign urban planners for expert service in construction of a new capital city in Mt Humpden, 14km from Harare’s central business district. This comes amid revelations that construction of a new Parliament Building will commence after offsite infrastructure has been put in place. Principal Director for Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Colonel (Retired) Joseph Mhakayakora, told The Sunday Mail: “We are in the process of engaging several town planners concerning the construction of the city because for us to begin new Parliament building construction there is need for offsite infrastructure to be in place.
“The offsite infrastructure will constitute part of the city thus we began consultations and the project is set to kick off soon.”
The new city is part of a grand strategy to de-congest Harare, which was originally tailored for a population of about one million but is now accommodating more than twice that.
Designed in the mould of South Africa’s Sandton in Johannesburg, the new capital city will accommodate Government ministries, Parliament, residential areas, shopping malls, hotels and light industries.
