Govt mobilises US$90m

launching the programme in Harare yesterday, Health and Child Welfare Minister Henry Madzorera said family planning, cervical cancer, gender-based violence and HIV were the main priorities under the funding.

Sponsored by a number of international donors, the programme started last year and was expected to run until 2015.

The United Nations Population Fund will be the fund manager.
“The priority areas focus on the sexual and reproductive health issues that are often left out or are given little attention during programming, yet they have a negative impact on all our efforts to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights in achievement of Millennium Development Goals,” said Minister Madzorera.

The minister said indicators for family planning, cervical cancer and gender-based violence were not encouraging.

The unmet need for family planning remains stagnant at 13 percent since 1999.
About 10 women die due to pregnancy related complications everyday and 30 percent of the deaths are of unwanted pregnancies.
