THE Minister of State for National Security, Lovemore Matuke, has urged members of the public not to participate in unsanctioned protests dubbed the July 31 shutdown planned for today, saying law enforcement agencies are on high alert and prepared to maintain peace and public order.
In a statement yesterday, Minister Matuke dismissed social media calls for protests, which are purported to be in opposition to the enactment of the Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3 (CAA3).
“The CAA3 constitutional amendment is now law and has been incorporated into the Constitution. Those who wish to demonstrate against our Constitution will be dealt with accordingly by the State institutions responsible for defending the Constitution,” he said.
Minister Matuke said Zimbabwe is a country governed by the rule of law.
“This is a country with laws; this is a country with law enforcement agents and I can assure you that nothing of that sort will happen. Law enforcement agents will be ready and waiting to pounce on those engaging in nefarious activities. Zimbabweans are law-abiding citizens. Anything that exposes them to vulnerability will not be tolerated,” he said.
Assuring Zimbabweans that peace and normalcy would prevail across the country today, Minister Matuke said Government is committed to safeguarding lives, property and public order.
“Zimbabwe is a peace-loving nation. We will protect our citizens against those who want to unconstitutionally remove the Government from power through covert means,” he said.
“I can assure you, this is a peaceful country and there will be peace and tranquillity come July 31”.
Minister Matuke said while citizens are free to express their views within the confines of the law, any actions that threaten public peace, security or constitutional order will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Police have warned against the misuse of social media platforms to spread misinformation, incite violence or mobilise unlawful activities.
