Govt orders chiefs to stop demarcating boundaries

Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatious Chombo last week said no-one is allowed to demarcate new boundaries in the contested areas.
This follows reports of several boundary disputes across Zimbabwe especially in areas designated during the land reform programme.
Minister Chombo, however, said boundary disputes would only be solved next year.
He said a committee was currently working on determining the actual boundaries of all chiefdoms across the country.
“As things stand no chief or district administrator or any other Government official should arbitrate in boundary disputes or demarcate new boundaries until we gazette the actual boundaries.
“We have a team that is busy on the ground working to determine the actual boundaries of all chiefdoms countrywide including contested areas.
“The findings of the committee are expected to be out by mid next year and we will then gazette the actual boundaries so until such a time, no one is allowed to handle the issues of boundary disputes,” he said
Several chiefs are fighting for control of areas that were formally under white farmers before the land reform programme.
The traditional leaders are also fighting over shrines in the same areas.
Other clans are pushing Government to restore their chieftainships they claim to have been stripped by the colonial Government.
Chiefs who resisted collaborating with authorities before independence were stripped of their powers. Some were even demoted and forced to serve a loyal chief.
