Government has pledged to avail land for the establishment of Muzenda Sports Academy in honour of the late national hero and Vice President Dr Simon Muzenda in the country’s oldest town.

The planned academy will be a provincial centre for golf, tennis and cricket.

Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Cde Ezra Chadzamira said Government stood ready to support the birth of the academy that will be conveyor belt of sporting talent in the province.

He was speaking at the Muzenda Sports Festival held at Masvingo Sports Club last weekend.

“The planned Muzenda Sports Academy is vital as it educates our young generation of our history and I want to make it clear that as Government we will make sure that land is always available for such developments.”

“With the coming of devolution, we can utilise our resources for the benefit of our communities and I want to take this opportunity to inform you that we have already offered you land to set up the Muzenda Sports Academy as per your request,” he said.

Cde Chadzamira challenged the Muzenda Trust to make sure the planned academy has a national footprint since the late Vice President Muzenda was a national leader.

“We expect to see the Muzenda Trust growing bigger and spreading to all the four corners of the nation because the late Vice President was a national figure whose legacy should not be restricted to Masvingo Province only,” said Cde Chadzamira.

Masvingo Golf Association provincial captain Mr Sternly Kondongwe, who made the appeal for land, said the academy will identify and nurture talent in sports such as cricket, tennis and golf, which will put Masvingo on the national sporting map. Mr Simon Muzenda (Jnr), who was representing the Muzenda Trust, said Masvingo has the potential to be a nursery of sporting talent in Zimbabwe.

“As the Muzenda Trust, we are working towards the development cricket, tennis and golf here in Masvingo Province.

“We expect to have referees, umpires and directors for national teams from here,” said Mr Muzenda (Jnr).

The annual Muzenda Golf Tournament run by the Muzenda Trust has been in existence for four years and initially focused on golf before expanding to cover cricket and tennis due to public demand.

The trust also provides educational funding for 7 students ,who are talented in sport drawn from all corners of the country.
