Government has reaffirmed its commitment to address accommodation challenges at tertiary institutions by building hostels to cater for an estimated 130 000 college and universities. The deputy principal director in the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Mr Cuthbert Butete said recently that according to a survey conducted by Government, only 20 000 out of the 150 000 students in higher and tertiary institutions were accommodated in college hostels.
He said the 130 000 others were renting from private houses.
“We, therefore, intend to build hostels for the remaining 130 000 students,” said Mr Butete. “His Excellency President Mnangagwa has pledged to prioritise the welfare of students in the country.
“It is the new Government’s commitment to address infrastructural and facility needs for all students. Our new Government is dreaming big about students, considering the fact that they are the hallmark of national literacy and economic growth.”
At the same meeting, Mr Butete officially handed over prestigious awards from the ASA Board to over 150 student leaders and representatives from various learning institutions who attended the conference.
The conference was held under the theme, “Harnessing demographic dividends through investing in the student!”
