Government has expressed readiness to pay off $6 million in outstanding compensation to families in Chingwizi, Mwenezi East, who were displaced from their ancestral land in the Tugwi-Mukosi basin in Chivi to pave way for Zimbabwe’s largest inland dam.
The money will help the families rebuild their lives after their homes and property were ravaged by floods in the basin in early 2014.
Government only managed to pay a few of the 3 000 displaced families.
Director of Water Resources, Planning and Management in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement Mr Tinayeshe Mutazu this week said the State was ready to pay off the families.
“With regards to payment of the outstanding compensation to the families at Chingwizi, I am happy to say that Government is ready to pay the funds and what is only stopping the process now is absence of supporting documents that will indicate who has to be paid what.
“Once the supporting documents have been made available by the relevant office, payment of the money will be done,’’ said Mr Matazu.
This was after Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Cde Ezra Chadzamira had raised concern over delays in compensating the remaining families.
Minister Chadzamira said fully compensating the families would pave way for the opening of a new chapter in the lives of Tugwi-Mukosi flood victims at Chingwizi.
The new dispensation led by President Mnangagwa has been leaving no stone unturned in its quest to improve the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans in line with the quest to make Zimbabwe an upper middle income economy by 2030.
