THE Government has set 2025 as the completion year for Gwayi Shangani and Kunzvi dams’ construction, a strategic initiative to enhance irrigation development across the country, addressing long-standing challenges in water management and agricultural productivity.
The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) says the Gwayi Shangani Dam is currently 72,8 percent complete, while the Kunzvi Dam stands at 53 percent.
Speaking during the 2025 Ministry budget workshop, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development permanent secretary, Professor Obert Jiri said these flagship projects hold the promise of addressing the persistent water challenges that have long plagued the country’s largest metropolitan areas, Harare and Bulawayo.
“By successfully completing the Gwayi Shangani and Kunzvi dams we cannot only alleviate current water shortages, but also unlock new opportunities for irrigation and various economic activities,” said Professor Jiri.
