Chingwizi villagers in Mwenezi are in for a big treat this Christmas after the Government supplied them with rice, cooking oil and other goodies.

Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Shuvai Mahofa said the Government was committed to assisting the 3 000 families who were evacuated from Tokwe-Mukosi flood basin in Chivi to Chingwizi at the height of raging floods in March 2014.

She said the villagers have received rice donated by the Chinese government adding it has been a rare phenomenon for them in previous festivities.
Cde Mahofa said each family was given adequate portions of the rice over and above the $50 kg  bag of maize they receive monthly.

“I can safely say people at Chingwizi will enjoy Christmas this year like any other citizen after Government gave them rice and some groceries from our partners. We got this rice from the Chinese government,” said Cde Mahofa.

She said the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) depot had adequate maize to feed the needy during the rainy season.

“The villagers in Chingwizi have enough food with reports coming from Mwenezi suggesting that some of the families receive food rations twice or thrice per month as there are other partners complementing Government‘s efforts. There is no problem and I’m happy that the plight of Chingwizi families is being addressed,” she said.

Village head Samuel Tsikisai confirmed that they had received rice from the Government while other partners were giving them cooking oil, soap and other goodies for Christmas.

“This year it seems our children are going to enjoy a normal Christmas. The Government is really addressing our plight and Tongaat Hulett has also promised us something as they always do,” said Mr Tsikisai.

Minister Mahofa is on record saying the villagers will soon be moved to permanent settlements after the Government identified 6 000 hectares of land on seven farms in the district.

The farms include Masangula, Lundi and Mutilikwi Ranch.
