Govt to capacitate ZRP

Crime Reporter
Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga yesterday said Government was working towards providing the organisation with adequate resources and facilities to improve service delivery.

Comm-Gen Matanga said this while addressing 67 chief inspectors and inspectors from Harare and Mashonaland East who are undergoing a Rebranding Refresher Training Programme at Morris Depot in Harare.

“During my tour of police provinces, I was quite clear that we shall dedicate the year 2019 as the year of training. What was in our minds was that a functioning and vibrant police service is a vital cog towards Government efforts to turn around the country’s economy more so as the nation journeys towards an upper middle income economy by the year 2030,” he said.

Comm-Gen Matanga said the police force was the most visible arm of Government and that the manner in which they discharged their duties and rendered their services to clients had a huge bearing on the country’s image.

He said training and supervision of police officers will be ongoing in order to ensure that all strategies to rebrand and transform the organisation dovetail with Government’s national trajectory.

The training programme covers subjects such as the duties and responsibility of an officer-in-charge, resource management, crime management, corruption, customer care, briefing and debriefing, public order management, cybercrime and intellectual crime, community policing and retirement planning, among others.

Comm-Gen Matanga said officers-in-charge had a greater responsibility on their shoulders that calls for sober minds, dedication and willingness to learn and serve the nation.

“I also wish to point out that Government is working tirelessly to afford the police more resources and facilities to ensure that we give clients the best service. We remain alive to the fact that policing by its very nature requires the mobilisation and deployment of significant resources.

“I wish to also point out that as command we are aware of the various challenges affecting the organisation to effectively discharge its mandate,” he said.

Comm-Gen Matanga also said key tenets of democratic policing and building a good brand demanded institutions such the ZRP to be professional, transparent, honest as well as upholding the rule of law and human rights at all times.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Commissioners-General Stephen Mutamba, Elliot Mind Ngirandi and Learn Ncube, among other senior officers.
