The Government will next week convene an all stakeholders’ meeting to map out a lasting solution to the impending eviction of 1 500 families at Kingsdale Farm in Norton following a Supreme Court order compelling them to vacate the farm belonging to Mr Pieter Nicholas Neil.

Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Ignatious Chombo said the situation of the 1 500 families was dire and needed an urgent attention from all parties concerned.

“Early next week we are going to convene an all stakeholders’ meeting with the owner of the farm, where we will check the authenticity of all the available documents, and make a decision to ensure that we do not unnecessarily disadvantage our people

“It is necessary that before people are kicked out of that place, we need to identify where they will go. We cannot throw people out into the streets. This is the rain season, and you give people 30 days to go, where?

“I want to meet with the person who went to court, the owner of the farm, and the people who were served with the eviction order, so that we create harmony.”

Cde Chombo added that the owners of the farm should seek an audience with the local district administrator and report the illegal occupation.

He said the district administrator would then look for an alternative place to settle the people. He, however, said the Government would abide by the Supreme Court ruling, while a lasting solution was being sought to address the plight of the affected failies.

The 1 500 families who are members of the Kingsdale Housing Cooperative had been given land by the Government, but the donation was invalidated by the court.

The Supreme Court last Wednesday granted Mr Neil’s application to nullify the acquisition of Kingsdale Farm after it emerged that the land had been illegally acquired from him.
