GOVERNMENT is introducing technical high schools across the country, in an endeavour to develop practical minded learners who will fit in the Second Republic’s industrialisation agenda.
This was said by Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Permanent Secretary, Mrs Tumisang Thabela, while presenting the Secretary’s Merit Award to Nyazura Adventist High School in Makoni District last week.
“The current focus of the ministry as it gains traction in the implementation of the competence-based curriculum is to scale-up the uptake of technical education in all its schools. The intention is to have graduates at all school levels being able to produce goods and services for their communities and the country at large.
“Primary schools are expected to offer pre-vocational learning areas to allow learners to acquire elementary practical skills. At secondary level, learners are expected to write a National Foundation Certificate examination. Post ‘O’ Level learners can then undertake the National Certificate or equivalent courses,” she said.
Mrs Thabela added: “Some learners will be trade tested, starting from skilled Worker Class Three in Form Two; Class Two in Form Four and lastly Class One in Form Six.
“Workplace attachment will form part of the praxis for this pathway. Please, enable our children to do well in the areas they are skilled in.”
She hailed Nyazura High School for offering technical courses to its learners.
“It is pleasing to note that Nyazura High School offers Computer Studies, Agriculture, Food Science, Textile Technology and Design, Wood Technology and Design, Building Technology and Design,” said Mrs Thabela.
Nyazura High School head, Mr Aaron Kutseza, said his school is humbled to receive the Merit Award.
He added that his school remained resilient and committed beyond call of duty, resulting in high pass-rates, excellent records in extra curriculum affairs and commercialisation of school projects.
“We have thriving projects here such as beef cattle and a dairy herd, broiler and layer chickens, horticulture for our own consumption and for sale.
“We have since partnered with Magamba Vocational College to boost our practical subjects and our learners will receive certificates of competence from the college,” said Mr Kutseza.
