GOVERNMENT will from next week start refurbishing sporting facilities at Mhangura and Alaska mines.
The sporting facilities there were affected by the closure of the mines at the turn of the century.
In a speech read on his behalf by director of sport, development and promotion, Eugania Chidhakwa during the 4th Edition of the Makonde Senator’s Sport Tournament in Chinhoyi during the weekend, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kazemba Kazembe said the refurbishments were part of the ministry’s Rapid Results Initiatives.
“The initiative seeks to proffer standardised hosting of events locally, regionally and internationally which, in our view as a Ministry, will contribute to the generation of podium-performance athletes,” he said.
“Through this project I am glad to announce that my Ministry will in the coming few days commence refurbishment works on Mhangura and Alaska sports and recreation clubs.”
The announcement was also met with high expectations from youths in the former mining towns.
“We are grateful that the Government is moving to rehabilitate the infrastructure and we are hopeful that the rehabilitation will help create employment, entertainment and exposure,” Mangura’s Simbarashe Zimbandi said.
Meanwhile, youths who excel during the Makonde Senator Sporting Tournament have a chance of representing Zimbabwe at the International Working Group of Women in Sport to be hosted by Botswana from May 16 to 20 this year.
