This follows widespread reports of ill treatment of patients by nursing staff in public health centres. Health and Child Welfare Deputy Minister Douglas Mombeshora told New Ziana patient care was Government’s top priority, hence the decision to include public relations in the curriculum.
“We are going to incorporate PR in nursing curriculum,” he said.
“The existing curricular is missing out on public relations.”
He said the ministry was also drafting a “patient’s charter” to uphold the rights of patients at health care centres.
“The charter will protect the rights of patients and gives patients the right to seek recourse in the case of unfair treatment or negligence,” he said
Patients who spoke to New Ziana said some deaths at hospitals were associated with negligence which could be avoided.
A patient said getting pregnant was now a death trap because of the inadequate care at public health centres.
“Some nurses attend to a patient when they want, they do not do it with the urgency it deserves,” said the patient.
One in 16 women are estimated to die from birth-related complications in Africa. – New Ziana.
