THE country’s security sector has a Constitutional mandate to fulfil and Government will not allow criminality and subversive inclinations of a few individuals bent on disrupting the normal life pursuits of the majority, a Cabinet Minister has said.
Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe made these remarks at yesterday’s media briefing on the country’s security situation in the aftermath of successfully hosting the 44th SADC Summit and its forerunner, the SADC Industrialisation Week.
“I am delighted to deliver this statement just a few days after the successful hosting of an incident free SADC Summit. Let me start by congratulating His Excellency the President, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa on his assumption of the chairmanship of SADC.
“On behalf of the security cluster, allow me to extend profound gratitude to all Zimbabweans for conducting themselves peacefully and orderly during the period preceding the hosting of the summit and on actual hosting days.
“This is despite, sustained efforts by some quarters to cause chaos through illegal and unjustifiable protests and riots,” he said.
Minister Kazembe said the security sector was proud to be associated with a citizenry that chose peace and unity of purpose ahead of conflict and selfish interests.
He urged the country’s citizens to pursue nationalistic values and to be wary of foreign instigators of strife and divisions.
“The general public’s disregard of calls to engage in acts of insurrection should never go unnoticed and should be solemnly acknowledged.
“The peaceful and tranquil environment that characterised the entire period of the hosting of the summit was a collective venture.
“All of us contributed to peace by choosing to abide by the Constitution and acting within the precincts of the law.
“The incident free hosting of the summit has earned our country enormous economic, political and social dividends,” said Minister Kazembe.
“We remain grateful to the warm and friendly welcome you extended to the visiting delegates, the love you shared with them. Zimbabweans are known for their hospitality and peacefulness.
“The security sector assures all visitors to Zimbabwe of an ever peaceful and secure environment whenever they decide to visit the country.”
Minister Kazembe said Zimbabwe was a sovereign State and equal player in the global polity adding that the security sector remained committed to preserving national security.
He urged citizens to enjoy the modern infrastructure put in place ahead of the summit, imploring drivers to observe road rules, regulations and general traffic etiquette.
Traffic laws enforcement would be tightened while land barons will also be brought to book.
“Space and land barons will be dealt with without fear or favour. Allow me to reiterate that the security sector remains guided by the principle of separation of powers in its conduct. We will not seek to interfere with the duties of other arms of State,” he said dismissing assertions from certain quarters that the Judiciary and security sector could be manipulated.
“Let us remain focused on sustaining peace and tranquillity as our Government continues working towards the attainment of Vision 2030 in support of His Excellency, Dr E.D Mnangagwa’s quest to improve the standard of living for everyone and to create the Zimbabwe we all want,” Minister Kazembe said. The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Ambassador Raphael Faranisi, Police Deputy Commissioners General Learn Ncube and Lorraine Chipato, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi and senior Government officials attended the media briefing.
