THE Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) Southern Region has donated five tonnes of mealie-meal to the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, in a gesture aimed at cushioning at least 500 vulnerable households and welfare facilities across the city.

The consignment was handed over on Monday morning at the Mhlahlandlela Government Complex by the millers through their Southern Region chairperson, Mr David Moyo.

He said the donation was part of the milling industry’s commitment to supporting communities in need and complementing the Government’s social protection interventions.

“As GMAZ, we understand the hardships that many families continue to face. Our mandate goes beyond milling grain; it extends to ensuring that communities remain resilient and supported. This donation is our small but sincere contribution towards easing food insecurity among vulnerable households in Bulawayo,” he said.

Mr Moyo added that GMAZ will continue working closely with the Government and local structures to identify critical areas of need, especially during difficult seasons.

Receiving the donation, Minister Ncube commended the millers for their timely and compassionate gesture, saying it would go a long way in cushioning affected families and institutions such as children’s homes, old people’s homes and disability centres.

“This donation is a lifeline for many families who are struggling to put food on the table. We are grateful to GMAZ for stepping forward. This is exactly the kind of partnership we encourage as we work towards ensuring that no one is left behind,” Minister Ncube said.

She said her office has already begun identifying the beneficiaries, prioritising households headed by the elderly, orphaned children, people with disabilities and low-income families.

Minister Ncube reiterated the Government’s commitment to strengthening food security programmes, adding that collaborative efforts between the State and private sector remain key in protecting citizens during difficult times.

“The challenges brought about by the drought have affected everyone, but the vulnerable have felt the greatest impact. Such acts of solidarity reaffirm our shared responsibility in building a caring society,” she said.

Beneficiaries are expected to receive the mealie-meal through established provincial distribution channels.

The donation comes as the province continues to roll out targeted drought-relief interventions under the guidance of the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, with support from private players and development partners.

Minister Ncube urged other corporates to emulate GMAZ’s example, noting that collective action is essential in strengthening community resilience.

“Let this be the beginning of many more partnerships anchored on service to our communities,” she said.
