Rehabilitation works at Grand Reef Aerodrome are progressing at an impressive pace as the province gears up to host the landmark 18th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo from September 10 to 12 in Mutare.

The showcase is held under the theme “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development- Our Future”

Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) chief executive officer, Mr Tawanda Gusha, together with Permanent Secretary of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Dr Takaruza Munyanyiwa, led a progress inspection and oversight meeting at the facility.

In an update, ACZ said, “An inspiring day at Grand Reef Aerodrome!” said Mr Gusha. “We are thrilled to report tremendous headway on the rehabilitation works, all in preparation for the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo!”

The upgrades, which include runway strengthening, terminal improvements, and safety enhancements, are designed to ensure that the aerodrome can handle larger aircraft and increased passenger volumes expected during the expo.

Added ACZ “The local community is filled with excitement and as the Wasu people say, “Wasu, takugadzirirai kumugamuchirai nesuwo!” (We, the Wasu, have prepared ourselves to welcome you!)”

For the first time since its inception, Zimbabwe’s premier tourism showcase renowned for drawing global buyers, investors, and exhibitors will be staged in Mutare, marking a deliberate shift to expand tourism opportunities beyond traditional hubs.

The expo venue, Mutare Sports Club, has undergone extensive refurbishment, while feeder roads, the Mutare Flyover, and other key infrastructure are also being upgraded.

Together with the transformation of the Grand Reef Aerodrome, these works form part of a broader Government effort to position Manicaland as a competitive tourism hub.
