Grandfather on rape charge

A 61-year-old Gwanda man has appeared in court for allegedly raping his two grandchildren both aged seven.  The man, from Nkazhe briefly appeared before Matabeleland South provincial magistrate-in-charge Mr Douglas Vakayi Chikwekwe on Tuesday facing charges of rape.He was not asked to plead but was advised to apply for bail to the High Court.
He was remanded in custody to 22 July.

Allegations are that on 5 July this year at about 7am, the man entered into a bedroom hut where his two grandchildren were sleeping.
Their grandmother was not at home.

He allegedly ordered the complainants to follow him to the kitchen where he slept and promised to give them money if the two did what he wanted.
When the complainants refused the man allegedly dragged the two into the kitchen and allegedly raped them one after another.

He allegedly threatened to kill the complainants if they revealed what had happened to them. He then allegedly ordered the two to go to school.
The same day at about 9pm, the accused again went to the bedroom hut where the two were sleeping. He took one of the complainants and allegedly raped her again and also forced her to sleep in his blankets with him for the rest of the night.

The issue came to light when the complainants revealed what had happened to their grandmother.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the man’s arrest.
