A 60-YEAR-OLD Marange woman allegedly tortured her granddaughter by placing hot round nuts inside her clothes on Christmas Eve.

This was meant to force her to admit that she had stolen US$20 from a tuck shop.

The grandmother has now been arrested.

The victim was staying with her grandmother in Rubatso Village as her mother re-married in Hot Springs.

She suffered serious burns and, for an entire month, was not taken to a medical facility as her mother was reluctant to report the case.

However, the case spilled onto social media and police reacted, leading to the arrest of the grandmother.

Acting Manicaland Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the case. He said the child’s mother took her from Marange to Hot Springs as she did not want her mother to be arrested.

“The grandmother poured roasted round nuts inside the victim’s clothing twice as a way of forcing her to confess to the allegations.

“The victim was also assaulted.

“The victim contacted her mother on December 25, 2025, and advised her about what had happened but the mother did not to check the condition due to financial constraints.

“On January 14, 2026, the mother visited the accused person and the victim narrated the story and showed her mother the wounds, no police report was made.”

He added: “The mother wanted to leave the victim with the accused person but the victim refused to be left behind and went with her mother to Hot Springs, where she is staying.

“The victim’s mother did not make a formal report on the grounds that she does not want the grandmother to be arrested since she was the one who looked after her daughter.

“The matter came to light after it circulated on social media groups. An informant alerted the police leading to the arrest of the grandmother of on January 24, 2025.

“The complainant was referred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for examination and treatment. The accused is expected to appear in court.”
