A 62-year-old grandmother yesterday wants her ex-son-in-law to pay for the maintenance of his six-year-old child.
Nokuthaba Musonga’s daughter dumped the baby at her doorstep when the toddler was only six months old.
She has now dragged John Muranganwa, the father of the child, to the maintenance court.
She told the court that she has single-handedly raised the child in the last six years.
“I woke up to find my grandchild on my door and my daughter was nowhere to be found.
“I was left with no choice but to take care of my grandchild.
“However, it has been a struggle to provide for the child’s needs and I believe the father should take responsibility.”
She is seeking monthly maintenance of US$150 from John.
“I want him to pay US$150 for fees, clothes, food, and medical expenses,” she said.
In response, John said he was not able to pay the monthly maintenance of US$150 because he has three other children to take care of from his current marriage.
“I understand that I have a responsibility to my child but I also have a responsibility to my other children.
“Paying US$150 per month would be a significant burden on my family. I can afford to pay US$35,” he said.
Magistrate Meenal Naratom ordered John to pay US$70.
