Grandmother assaulted over grandson’s rape accusation

A MAN from Nyamandlovu has appeared in court for assaulting a 67 year- old woman from Efusini township, Tsholotsho over allegations that her grandson raped his daughter.

Hlanani Sibanda (39) from Nyamandlovu appeared before Tsholotsho magistrate Mr Victor Mpofu last week and was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment of which eight were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

According to the State as presented by prosecutor Mrs Tarisai Mujokoro on 30 March, and at around 5PM, Sibanda was at Tsholotsho Business Centre when he met Ms Babra Ndlovu who was doing her business of vending.

Sibanda approached her and asked “Do you know NaThemba” and she said yes, she is her daughter.

Sibanda then told her that her son Themba raped his daughter and started assaulting Ms Ndlovu several times on the face with a leather hat. Ndlovu reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of Sibanda.

The old lady suffered a swollen left cheek and was referred to Tsholotsho District Hospital for medication and medical certificate which will be produced in court as evidence.- Angel Nkomo.
