A 66-year-old grandfather entrusted with the custody of his 14-year-old granddaughter allegedly raped her three times and infected her with a sexually transmitted infection.

The grandfather appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mr Adonia Masawi facing three counts of rape.

The court heard that he was the guardian of the girl and they resided at the same house in Kambuzuma.

The suspect is in custody.

Prosecutor Mr Liberty Gono alleged that sometime in August 2013, the minor was at home with her grandfather.

She prepared lunch and took it to her grandfather’s bedroom to serve him.

It is alleged that the grandfather leapt to the door and locked it.

The court heard that he then gagged the girl’s mouth, ordering her to remove her underwear.

She resisted but was overpowered and pushed to the floor. The man stripped and raped her.

He threatened the girl not to reveal the sexual assault.

In August last year, the court heard that the grandfather approached the girl while she was cleaning the house.

He locked the door and exposed his manhood before carrying her to his bedroom where he raped her for the second time.

In January this year, the grandfather took advantage of the absence of other people at the house and raped the girl again.

It is alleged that the girl tried to scream but was threatened and told that she would be kicked out of the house if anyone knew about the abuse.

On July 8 the girl fell sick and was taken to hospital for treatment.

She was diagnosed with a uterus infection and opened up about the sexual abuse, leading to her grandfather’s arrest.
