A 97-YEAR-OLD woman from Nyamapere Village, under Chief Katerere in Nyanga, was found dead after being caught in a veld fire while collecting grass in preparation for the rainy season.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Ms Letty Matore (97).
Ms Matore left home on October 20 at around 12pm to cut grass, while carrying a metal tin containing charcoal.
Her son, Mr Charles Towa, became concerned when she failed to return by 6pm and went to the field to search for her.
“Towa noticed that his mother had not returned home by 6pm and proceeded to the field to look for her, but he could not find her,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka, adding that other villagers joined the unsuccessful search.
The search ended tragically on October 21, when her daughter-in-law, Mrs Laina Matore (57), discovered the body.
“On October 21, Laina Matore discovered granny Matore’s body, which had been severely burnt. A report was made to Ruwangwe Police Station, who attended the scene,” Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said. The body sustained severe burns on the legs, hands, face, and buttocks, and the metal tin was recovered nearby.
Police urged the public to avoid starting fires during the hot season.
