ZIMBABWEAN gospel music touched hearts and revived memories over the weekend as The Grateful Experience made a triumphant Canadian debut.

The two shows were held in Edmonton and Toronto.

For many of those who attended, the show was more than just another concert.

It became an emotional reunion with home through music, worship, language and culture as Zimbabwean gospel heavyweights Michael Mahendere, Shingisai Suluma, Eleana Makombe, Sharon Cherayi and Ellard Cherayi delivered unforgettable performances before packed venues.

The Canadian edition marked another huge milestone for The Grateful Experience brand, which continues to spread its wings beyond the United Kingdom, where another major edition is already lined up for Birmingham later this month.

From the moment the first worship song echoed through the venue, emotions took over as Zimbabweans based in Canada sang loudly, waved flags and danced to songs that reminded them of church services, family gatherings and gospel concerts back home.

For a diaspora community starved of live Zimbabwean gospel content, the event arrived as a timely spiritual and cultural reconnection.

Some fans were seen wiping away tears during worship sessions while others recorded videos and called relatives back home to share the atmosphere in real time.

The excitement around the event had been building for weeks on social media and the response on the night showed just how hungry Zimbabweans abroad are for authentic homegrown experiences.

Show host and organiser, Eleana Makombe, could not hide her joy following the successful Canadian debut.

“To every single person who attended, stood on their feet and lifted their voice with us, thank you,” she said.

“Thank you for trusting Grateful Events with your evening. Thank you for embracing our artists and the entire team with such warmth and energy.

“We heard you. We saw where we can do better. And, yes, we are coming back. This is not a one-time visit.

“Canada, you are now part of the Grateful Experience family,” she said.

Veteran gospel queen Shingisai Suluma delivered one of the most emotional sets of the evening, reminding fans why she remains one of Zimbabwe’s most respected gospel voices.

Her timeless songs triggered loud singalongs from the crowd, with many fans visibly overwhelmed by finally witnessing her perform live in Canada.

“It was such a wonderful experience performing with the new crop of Zimbabwe’s gospel musicians,” she said.

“The Lord has been good to us over the years and this is just but a testimony of how staying true to the word helps instant connection with the audience and artists.”

Meanwhile, Michael Mahendere brought his trademark energy and electrified the atmosphere with a lively set that had worshippers dancing, singing and celebrating throughout the night.

Power couple Sharon and Ellard Cherayi also captivated the audience with deeply spiritual worship moments that united Zimbabweans and other African nationals in attendance.
