THE Great Zimbabwe Marathon scheduled for October 19, one of the country’s most celebrated sporting events, is marking a significant milestone this year as it turns five.
What began as a bold dream to blend athletic excellence with cultural heritage has now grown into a nationally recognised event that places Masvingo on the global map.
Towards the end of 2024, the marathon received official recognition from World Athletics, solidifying its place among professionally-rated races worldwide, a first for a road race hosted in Masvingo.
Founded by Loreen Alutah Chari, a proud daughter of Chivi, born and raised in the soil that gave rise to Zimbabwe’s ancient civilisation, Loreen’s deep connection to the area fuels her vision: “To make the Great Zimbabwe Marathon one of Africa’s premier destination running events”.
She is also the club captain of Eastview Elites Running Club (the event’s hosts).
The marathon is more than just a race, it’s a movement, Chari said.
“This is not just a marathon; it’s a celebration of who we are as Zimbabweans.
“Running through the land of our ancestors and finishing at the Great Zimbabwe Monuments connects us to our roots in a truly profound way.
“We intend to elevate the Great Zimbabwe Marathon into one of Africa’s top destination races, drawing runners from around the globe to experience the country’s heritage and spirit. The race starts at Clipsham, taking runners on a scenic and symbolic journey that finishes at the Great Zimbabwe Monuments Campsite — one of the country’s most treasured heritage sites.’’

Along the way, athletes are treated to breathtaking views and a tangible sense of heritage, unmatched by any other race in the country. Participants are not only challenged physically but also immersed into the warmth of smiles of the Karanga people.
The 2025 edition offers three certified race categories, 10km Fun Run, 25km Challenge and the 42.2km full marathon qualifier race.
The marathon is also a qualifier for some of Africa’s most prestigious races, including the Two Oceans Marathon and the Comrades Marathon in South Africa.
As a special addition to the race’s 5th anniversary, will be a 5km category.
Each year, hundreds of athletes, spectators, and tourists from across Zimbabwe and beyond descend on Masvingo to participate in or witness this unique road race, which gives them an experience of the historic landscape of the Great Zimbabwe ruins — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the spiritual heart of the nation.
“Masvingo has so much more to offer than people realise,” added Chari.
“This race is about showcasing our cultural roots, attracting the world to our doorstep, and inspiring the next generation of Zimbabwean runners.”
The fifth edition of the marathon promises to be the biggest yet, with increased participation from elite and social runners, cultural showcases, and international attention that highlight Masvingo’s rich history and natural beauty.
