Greats to grace Olympic Run

Chitungwiza Town Centre next week.
Tendai Chimusasa, Tapfumanei Jonga, Gailey Dube and Abel Chimukoko will carry the Olympic flame from the Town House to Chitungwiza on the eve of the celebrations.
The Olympic Day celebrations have been slated for June 25 and yesterday Harare deputy mayor Joshua Nyatsuro pledged support for the 2011 celebrations.
Speaking at the launch of the Olympic Week at Town House yesterday, Nyatsuro said they were in full support of the Olympic celebrations.
The Olympic Week will start next week on Monday and several activities have been lined up for Chitungwiza.
The major highlight will be the torch relay set for Friday from Town House to Chitungwiza Town City.
“In 2009, the IOC broadened the reach by introducing the Olympic Day which then provided an enlarged opportunity for participation as the scope of sporting disciplines was broadened from athletics to include other disciplines under the theme ‘move, learn and discover’.
“This fits perfectly with the City of Harare’s endeavours to promote a healthy citizenry through safe and sustainable means, sport being one of them.
“We therefore are in full support of the Olympic Day celebrations, the organisation of which we have been involved in as the local authorities for quite some time now.
“We intend to continue this collaboration with ZOC in support of this event as it has arguably one of the most significant benefits to the well being of our citizens,” said Nyatsuro.

He urged public members to participate in the celebrations and congratulated ZOC for promoting sport.
ZOC president Admire Masenda said besides the run, the Olympic Day presents a platform for people to experience the Olympic values.
“Besides the run, the Olympic Day is a great opportunity for a large audience to experience Olympic values and live the Olympic experience outside Games time.
“Beginning 2010, the event took a step forward by becoming an Olympic Week events lined up for the entire week in Chitungwiza where the national event was held.
“The Olympic Day brings under one umbrella (sport, cultural and educational activities) promoting and celebrating the Olympic Movement and its values.
“As ZOC we take pride in making a positive difference to society and Olympic Day celebrations epitomise such endeavours outside the Olympic Games,” said Masenda.
