Green Ambassador Dereck Mpofu is not hanging up his boots just yet.
After being humiliated when the third edition of the Green Concert (featuring renowned regional artistes) flopped a few weeks ago, he has organised yet another show at Old Mutual Alliance Francaise Theatre on Saturday.
Dubbed “At the Surgery”, the show is a departure from his usual concerts and explores his hilarious side. At the show Mpofu will collaborate with comedian Uncle Ritchie to spice up his acts with comic lines.
In an interview, it was clear the Green Concert mishap was behind him.
“The flop was a learning curve for me and I am moving on from it. It is difficult to host shows like those because not many are willing to support issue to do with the environment but it is far from over. Actually, it inspired me to leave my comfort and explore my other side,” said a jovial Mpofu.
Speaking on the upcoming show, Mpofu said the need to go the comical route came upon the realisation that most locals are too “serious”.
He said the show was meant to break the ice and give people a dosage of the music and comedy theory.
In the show, the “Chisikana Changu Zimbabwe” will also rope in songstress Marble Madondo.
“I am a multi-faceted artiste and while many know me as the Green Ambassador, I am also embracing another side of me. Through this show, we want to make people lighten up with good music and comedy. After all, music is the food of life while comedy is the best medicine,” he said.
Mpofu said he will play most of his sweet love songs and also cover versions of his favourite artistes.
Uncle Ritchie, real name Richard Matimba of the “Wotoshaya Kuti Zviri Kufamba Sei” fame, revealed he had tricks up his sleeve and fans were in for a treat.
“My performance will be an extension of Dereck Mpofu’s act. I have new material for the show and I have something on tezvara (popular social networks ‘father-in-law’ who attended a wedding in shorts ). But, generally, I don’t target people and attack them with offensive jokes — it is merely making fun out of situations,” said Uncle Ritchie.
