GIANTS CAPS United are not quite sure what to expect in their last match of the season as the curtain comes down on a difficult season against unpredictable Herentals at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The Green Machine would love to sign off with a win at least, to bury the sorrows of the 2023 season, in which they had to fight hard at the back end of the campaign to escape the relegation talk.
They could still finish in the top eight but they know Herentals are no pushovers, having beaten both Harare giants CAPS United and Dynamos this season.
Makepekepe lost the reverse leg 1-2 and assistant coach Tonderai Marume said they would not want to lose back-to-back matches against the Students.
“All the games we played against Herentals haven’t been easy because they are a team that thrives on hard work. So when playing against them, you also have to match them for work ethic.
“Considering the position they are in; this is a team that has done well this season. They have collected positive results from games that looked difficult.
“So, we expect a tough game, but on our side we are prepared. We are also delighted with the way we have been posting points lately and that also gives us confidence going into this match.
“We also have a team that has been playing regularly for quite a number of games and that can help us to be consistent in terms of consistency and results,” said Marume.
After hitting an iceberg midstream, and going 11 games win-less at some point during the campaign, the CAPS United ship appears back in course.
They have gathered themselves up well and are unbeaten in their last eight outings. CAPS United are ninth on the log standings with 43 points from 10 wins, 13 draws and 10 defeats from 33 games.
Herentals, on the other hand, are nestled in sixth place and still fancying a top four finish. They have 51 points in the bag and could finish above Highlanders and Chicken Inn who are tied on 52 points going into the final round of matches.
Dethroned champions FC Platinum will wind off their campaign away to Sheasham at Bata tomorrow while Highlanders host incoming champions Ngezi Platinum Stars at Barbourfields on Sunday.
