Greenfuel breathed a sigh of relief after posting their biggest win of the season, thumping newcomers Arenel Movers, in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Greenfuel Arena yesterday.
It was Greenfuel’s first game since parting ways with head coach Rodwell Dhlakama, who failed to meet targets set by the ambitious Chisumbanje based outfit.
Greenfuel were the hungrier of the two sides as everyone played for his place, with Taurai Mangwiro, the main candidate to take over, watching from the stands. The hosts could have scored inside the first 15 minutes but Tinotenda Meke’s effort from close range crashed against the crossbar after a good cross from Brian Chikwenya.
The goal eventually came in the 17th minute with Donald Ngoma placing his effort beyond the reach of Arenel goalkeeper Delron Chuma, off another beautiful cross from James Nguluve.
Ngoma could have doubled the lead three minutes later but his header was parried for a corner kick by Chuma, who was equal to the task.
Meke and Nguluve were too hot to handle for the visiting defence, with their blistering pace and dribbling skills and the latter came close on the cusp of halftime.
His strike from 10 yards was blocked by Arthur Ndlovu, with his keeper wrong footed.
The second half was a balanced affair and Arenel Movers enjoyed a greater share of possession but could not penetrate the resolute Greenfuel defence despite missing captain Raymond Uchena, who went AWOL as he was expected back in the squad after completing his suspension which ruled him out of the CAPS United midweek fixture.
Greenfuel wanted it more and Meke scored a solo goal, dribbling past the visiting defenders before deceiving goalkeeper Chuma with a cheeky finish to double his team’s lead just after the hour mark.
Greenfuel interim coach Innocent Chogugudza gave minutes to some fringe players as he introduced Clive Rupiya and Naison Takawira as well as Young Warriors forward Washington Mapuwa, and the youngsters did not disappoint as they added fluidity in the final third.
Rupiwa benefited from a good move involving Mapuwa to score his first goal of the season sealing Boyz Dzenharo’s first win post Dhlakama’s era. Dhlakama was relieved of his duties as Greenfuel head coach after their 3 nil defeat to Caps United on Wednesday.
