if they are to groom their students to be self-reliant after completion of their studies, Masvingo Provincial Education Director Clara
Dube has said.
Speaking at the just ended Dzimbabwe Poetry expo held at the Charles Austin Theatre last week, Dube said gone were the days where people could afford to look down upon arts subjects.
The expo was meant to honour former Masvingo Christian High student Promise Mudavanhu who came first in poetry competition in last year’s Star-Brite competition held in Harare.
She said it was high time teachers should seriously consider teaching arts subjects in all schools.
“I think we should all start to take arts subjects seriously. A lot of our students are talented in various areas such as poetry and music so there is a need to formalise teaching of these subjects. Arts subjects are good as they can also help students to become self-employed later,” said Dube.
Dube also pleaded with the organisers of the event to consider holding similar galas in various parts of the province.
Dzimbabwe Poets director Tatenda “Dhege” Chinoda promised to scout talent in all districts within the province.
He said he would go from one district to another grooming youngsters to have an appreciation of arts.
“This is just a beginning; soon we will be in Chiredzi having a similar gala. Our aim is to cover all seven districts,” said Chinoda.
