The security guard was found unconscious in the guard room the following morning by a another security guard who reported for duty at Omni Africa company premises.
He discovered that the main door to the offices had been tampered with and that of the store room. A report was made to the police and it was discovered that 23 computers, two monitors, cartridges and an alarm key pad all worth US$81 791 had been stolen.
Police suspect the guard was drugged with a drink spiked with unknown substance that left the guard lying unconscious.
National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi yesterday said the security guard who was on duty during the night was approached by a man who was driving a red car.
“The thief pretended as if his vehicle had developed a mechanical fault before staying in his vehicle for some minutes,” he said.
He said the thief later informed the guard that he was feeling cold and wanted to sit with him in the guard room. The unsuspecting guard complied and the thief got inside while drinking his beer.
It is alleged that the thief later offered the security guard a Revive drink and a pie.
“The guard ate and took the drink and after finishing, he became unconscious,” Chief Supt Nyathi said.
