A SECURITY guard will spend nine years in jail for raping a Form 4 pupil. The guard, who resides at 1277 Maguta Street in Epworth, was yesterday sentenced to 14 years in prison by Harare magistrate Mr Noel Mupeiwa for raping the 18-year-old girl.

Five years of the sentence were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar crime. In passing sentence, Mr Mupeiwa said rape is a serious offence, which takes away the dignity of the victim.

“There is need to send a clear message to the accused and the community that the court does not condone such misbehaviour in society,” he said. Prosecutor Tinashe Makiyi proved that on July 11 this year the girl went to Les Brown swimming pool, behind Harare Gardens to swim.

Upon arrival, she was told by the guard manning the place that she could not swim since it was winter time and the girl left. The guard escorted the girl to the toilet and waited for her to relieve herself.

Before she could leave the toilet, the guard pounce on her, knocked her to the ground and raped her twice without protection. He threatened to kill her if she revealed the rape to anyone.

After the act, the girl reported the matter to the police leading to the man’s arrest.
