GUKUKU Secondary School are the inaugural winners of the Chikweza Soccer Tournament held at Mangwerume Primary School in Mwenezi District in Masvingo at the weekend. The tournament which had initially been billed to be a six-team affair was reduced to a four-team extravaganza after two schools Tsungirirai and Zvanaka Secondary schools failed to turn up leaving Namande, Gukuku, Nikita and Mayezi Secondary schools to battle it out for top honours.
The tournament was then reduced to a round robin tournament which saw Namande topping the standings with five points after winning one match before drawing two matches while Gukuku and Nikita had four points apiece but the former came second because of a superior goal difference.
Mayezi anchored the log standings after only managing two draws.
The top two teams proceeded to the final which saw Gukuku edging Namande 2-1 to collect $150 winners’ prize.
Apart from the money Gukuku also won a football kit, two balls, 20 medals and a floating trophy while the losing finalists took home $60, a football kit and two balls.
Nikita who beat Mayezi 1-0 in the third and fourth place play-offs took home R200 and two balls and so did Mayezi.
Organiser of the tournament, Beitbridge businessman Ephert Shoko who was holding the tournament in memory of his father, Mugwagwa Chikweza, said he was impressed with the talent which was exhibited at the tournament.
An 18-member select was finalised and Shoko said he will help the youngsters to register into Division Two next season for them to improve their skills.
