A GWERU motorist lost a loaded pistol and US$1 300 in a daring daylight smash-and-grab after stepping away from his parked vehicle to look for drinking water.
The swift theft occurred near Drive Inn in Gweru on 15 July 15 around 3PM. Police are treating it as a targeted hit.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident, saying officers have launched an investigation into the theft of both money and a firearm from a vehicle.
Tafadzwa Mutauriki (40), the victim, had parked his Nissan Vannette truck at a car wash in the area and locked all doors before stepping away.
“Mutauriki left the vehicle and went to look for water. When he returned five minutes later, the doors were open and his satchel was gone,” said Insp Mahoko.
Inside the satchel was US$1 300 cash, a pistol, a loaded magazine and 30 loose rounds of ammunition.
Police believe the culprits may have been monitoring Mutauriki before striking.
“We urge members of the public to enhance the security of their property and avoid leaving valuables inside unattended vehicles. Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects is urged to come forward,” said Insp Mahoko.
The audacity of the theft — and the fact that a firearm is now in criminal hands — has sent shockwaves through the community.
Meanwhile, police are stepping up patrols and advising motorists to avoid carrying large sums of cash or firearms unnecessarily.
The hunt for the suspects is ongoing.
