University of Zimbabwe’s Department of Technical Education lecturer Henry Matienga yesterday appeared in court charged with contravening the Firearms Act after pointing a gun at his landlord following an altercation over rent.
Matienga (48) of number 3 Moss Close, Mt Pleasant, appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe, facing charges of contravening Section 27 (b) of the Firearms Act Chapter 10.09.
Mr Mahwe granted Matienga US$50 bail, ordered him to reside at the given address and not to interfere with witnesses pending finalisation of the matter.
The court heard that the complainant in the matter is Mr Ian Mazorodze (30). Prosecutor, Ms Francesca Mukumbiri, alleges that on September 2 this year Matienga, who is a tenant at Mazorodze’s house, was at home. At around 6pm Mr Mazorodze approached Matienga in the cottage which he leases and demanded rent for the month of September.
It is alleged that the two had a heated argument over the amount of money Matienga owed.
In the course of the altercation Matienga allegedly became violent and rushed into his house where he grabbed a 12 Bore Shotgun Bakai.
Matienga pointed the weapon at his landlord, threatening to kill him. Mazorodze allegedly rushed to the main house where he narrated his ordeal to his brother.
The gun-toting Matienga followed his landlord to the main house but Mazorodze managed to run to the police with his brother where they reported the matter.
Police officers recovered the firearm and arrested Matienga.
The firearm was taken as an exhibit.
