A ROMANTIC drive turned into a nightmare when a couple was ambushed by armed robbers in the bushy stretch along Intemba Road between Pumula South and Pumula East in Bulawayo on Sunday.

The lovers, a 33-year-old man from Cowdray Park and a 24-year-old woman from Pumula East, were in a silver Honda on their way to Nkulumane around 6PM when two gun-toting thugs suddenly jumped into the road and forced them to stop.

The robbers opened the car doors and ordered the terrified woman to tie up her partner using a USB cable, hands and feet. The helpless man was then dumped on the back seat while one of the robbers took the wheel and drove the vehicle deep into the bush.

As the nightmare unfolded, one of the robbers fired a shot that shattered the driver’s window. The bullet ricocheted, hitting the woman on her left foot and leaving her bruised and swollen.

The robbers demanded cash and made off with two Samsung Galaxy phones, a small Nokia, and US$280 in cash.

In a sickening twist, one of the attackers tried to rape the injured woman but was overpowered, forcing the two thugs to flee the scene before completing their mission of terror.

The woman was rushed to hospital for treatment while police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident and urged anyone with information to come forward.
