YOUNG Sharon Gurani was the highlight of the Kamandama Memorial Golf tournament after she and her partner Vumbu Ncube scored 50 points to come a commendable third out of a field of 108 golfers at the Hwange Golf Club yesterday.“I feel very happy. I am particularly thrilled by coming up third against seasoned golfers,” said the Hwange High School Form Three pupil.
Gurani and Ncube were third behind veteran golfer Robson Dumani and his partner former Hwange Golf Club ladies’ captain Shirley Gwanonga who won the tournament with a score of 52 points.
The first runners-up were Speba Nyoni and Thomas Ngwira after scoring 50 points. The pair came second on a count-back against Vumi Moyo and Prisca Utete.
Christian Ncube and former soccer referee Khumbulani Chimiti were fourth with a score total of 48 points relegating Cephas Ncube and Colleen Rakabopa to fifth position.
Hwange Colliery Company managing director Thomas Makore and a Nyamande were naturally disappointed by a bad day on the greens after scoring 35 points.
The prize-giving ceremony was held last night with Chafferfly chief executive officer Godfrey Nyakudya, HCC human resources manager Fathi Mpofu and other dignitaries from the coal mining town community in attendance.
Meanwhile, Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko is today expected to officiate at the Kamandama mine disaster memorial ceremony. The event is in memory of 427 miners who perished in the worst mine disaster on June 6, 1972.
