THE 21st edition of the Dr Simon Vengai Muzenda Gutu Half Marathon which is held annually in honour of the late Vice-President has been scheduled for 6 November.
The event is meant to uplift the works of the late VP, whose wish when inaugurating the race 20 years ago was to promote sports in the rural areas. It has over the years developed to be arguably one of the biggest races on the national athletics calendar in terms of monetary rewards, attendance, as well as providing a variety of races and prizes that have included bicycles as well farming implements.
Titus Madzingo, the chairman of the event’s organising committee said preparations were going on smoothly.
“Preparations have been going on well. I can assure you that the race is there on 6 November here in Masvingo. The check in for every participant is on 5 November for registration,” said Madzingo.
The 21km event will see victors in both male and female categories walking away with US$600 while first runner-ups will get $500, third placed athletes $300 whereas position four and five will be consoled with $100 and $50 respectively.
According to Madzingo, the Muzenda family and unspecified well-wishers are the sponsors and organisers of the tournament.
Athletics clubs like Blue Ribbon, Lobels, Agribank, ZB Bank, Platinum Zvishavane, Mary Mount Teachers’ College, Masvingo Teachers’ College and Blanket Mine, among others have confirmed taking part.
