A 44-year-old Gutu man raped his two daughters aged 14 and 16 after the death of their mother and impregnated one of them. The man, (name withheld) from Kufa Village under Chief Nyamandi, claimed he wanted to get rid of bad luck in the family. He appeared in court and denied the charges, saying he only got into contact with his daughter’s private part as a “rite” to cast away a bad omen from the family and denied having intercourse with her. “Ndaida kubvisa munyama mumhuri. Handina kupinza  ndakangogumisa (I wanted to get rid of bad luck in the family. I did not penetrate but I just got into contact with her private parts,” he said.

Masvingo magistrate Lyn-Marry Manyika convicted the man and sentenced him to 20 years in prison for rape.
Prosecuting, Joshua Mundondo told how between October and November last year, the man shared a bed with his two daughters, one doing Form Two and the other one in Form Four and became intimate with them.

He impregnated the elder daughter who made a formal report to the police upon realising she was seven weeks pregnant, the court heard.
The girls testified in court saying their father shifted to their bedroom and the trio was sharing the same bed with the father sleeping between them.

On the first night the man slept with the girls, he caressed and forced one of them into sex while the younger sister watched.
The man undressed his victim and when she attempted to scream, he threatened her with death. From that day the man would rape his daughters on countless occasions.

The elder daughter discovered she was pregnant when she went to Mvuma to pursue her education.
