As schools open on Tuesday, Government has urged parents to ignore the unsanctioned fee increases announced by most schools and instead go with last term’s fees.
The Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture said the schools had announced the increases without first seeking Government approval as stated by the law.
The development has prompted Government to assemble teams that will this week descend on the errant schools with a view to taking disciplinary action against the offenders.
In an interview last week, Education, Sport, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Cde Lazarus Dokora said it was unprocedural for learning institutions to increase fees without Government approval.
He said his ministry would dispatch officers across the country to investigate the matter.
“We have gathered that some schools are asking parents to pay tuition fees that have not been approved by the Government.
“This is against procedure. The law stipulates that all new fees and levies should be approved by Government before they are passed on to the parents,” said the deputy minister.
A survey by The Sunday Mail last week revealed that several schools across the country have increased fees for the first school term.
