GOVERNMENT is working on supporting local businesspeople and providing equal opportunities to entrepreneurs as an economic growth strategy.

Speaking at the official opening of a local food court, Eat N Lick in Rezende Street, Harare Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary, Tafadzwa Muguti, said they have been meeting with businesspeople to assist them in any way they can.

“Everyone has an equal opportunity to get into business and succeed as we are all Zimbabweans.

“Zimbabweans are educated enough to open new businesses and not rely on foreigners who come and take business opportunities from us,” he said.

Muguti said people should adopt new ways of waste disposal so that the nation does not endure challenges associated with waste management.

“We are launching the Smart City concept which I believe is a great move to transform local cities in line with the vision of an upper middle income society by 2030,” he said.

He urged businesses that are operating illegally to register.

He indicated that about 75 percent of businesses in Harare are not registered.

“Some companies are not banking their money and this largely impacts on the economy.”

He warned Council workers against demanding bribes from businesspeople when licensing them.
