THE Government has stepped up diplomatic efforts to rescue and repatriate Zimbabwean nationals trapped in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, following reports that some citizens were lured into the war zone under the guise of lucrative employment opportunities.
This comes as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade confirmed it is now compiling a comprehensive database of all affected individuals to facilitate their safe return home.
The move follows a recent update by the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Soda Zhemu, who revealed that at least 15 Zimbabweans have since lost their lives in the conflict.
In a letter dated March 30, 2026, addressed to Mr Ezra Sibanda, who has been vocal about the plight of the stranded citizens, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade assured the nation that the matter is being handled with the “seriousness it deserves.”
“Efforts are currently underway to engage the relevant authorities in both Zimbabwe and Russia to ascertain the status of Zimbabwean nationals and to map a way forward regarding their safe return home,” the Ministry stated.
Government is also turning its heat on “merchants of death” recruitment agents who are allegedly trafficking unsuspecting Zimbabweans into military activities.
Minister Zhemu recently warned that many victims were deceived by social media advertisements promising high-paying jobs in the security and industrial sectors, only to have their passports confiscated upon arrival in Russia and being forced onto the front lines.
“The Government has been making concerted efforts to halt the enlistment of Zimbabwean civilians into military activities.
“In this regard, the Ministry respectfully requests the names and contact details of agents involved in such recruitment processes,” the ministry added.
It is believed that approximately 66 Zimbabweans are still trapped in the conflict zone. Families who have lost contact with their relatives in Eastern Europe have been urged to approach the ministry with information to assist ongoing investigations.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of all citizens abroad, warning youths to be vigilant against human traffickers masquerading as employment agents.
