GARIKAI Munashe Mawere, a Gwanda-based author has penned his debut book titled “His Daughter’s Vengeance” with his focal point being dangers encountered in artisanal mines and the offensive behaviour that may arise from that.
Mawere told Chronicle Showbiz that the book, published on 30 August this year is a mirror of Gwanda, a renowned mining town.
“His Daughter’s Vengeance talks about a 16-year-old girl, Panashe who is raised by a single father in Phakama, Gwanda. Her father works as a small-scale miner, a very risky profession in Gwanda. One-night, Panashe witnesses the brutal murder of her father at the hands of ruthless gold diggers and pushed by the voices in her head, she confronts the murderers to seek vengeance,” said Mawere.
Murder and attempted murder cases for gold are not a rare occurrence in the mining town and the book delves deep into what lengths people can go to get their hands on the precious mineral.
Mawere who is a plant attendant at Blanket Mine said his introversive nature ignited his writing career as he enjoys his solitude.
“I’m an introvert so I’m always deep in thought, enjoying my own company. One day, I decided to put my ideas on paper. That was when I discovered that writing is my God-given gift. I was about 13 years old when I started writing short stories.
“However, they were not published. After seriously considering a career in the writing industry, I felt like it was my duty to address certain issues that affect or happen in our everyday life, be it criticising or encouraging them,” said the 20-year-old.
He said the book is available as a hardcover, but soon, it will be made available on platforms like Amazon.
Inspired by the late Shimmer Chinodya, Mawere has already begun penning his second book titled, “A woman’s cry”.
