Stakeholders have gathered at Bethel Primary School in Gwanda to commemorate the district’s International Literacy Day.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister, Dr Omphile Marupi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Gwanda South Constituency, is set to officiate the event.
Held under the theme “Promoting literacy in the digital era,” the event highlights the critical role of digital literacy in today’s world. It emphasizes the need for everyone to safely access, understand, and create digital content. The goal is to ensure digitalization expands learning opportunities for all, especially marginalized groups, while addressing the risks of digital exclusion and the need for updated literacy skills to thrive in a changing world.

Organized by the Edward Ndlovu Memorial Trust, the event brings together students from various schools to participate in activities that promote a culture of reading and celebrate the importance of literacy. Students will compete in quizzes and reading competitions.

International Literacy Day is observed annually on 8 September. Declared by UNESCO on 26 October 1966 during its 14th General Conference, it was first celebrated in 1967. The day aims to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities, and societies.
