Mobilisation of resources for the Gwanda Mayor’s Fund is underway, with a target to assist over 250 families.
Speaking during a press conference, Gwanda mayor Alderman Thulani Moyo said the goal is to extend the impact of the programme each year.
“The cheer fund is there to bring happiness to the underprivileged at Christmas and show that leadership is not only about roads, buildings, and service delivery at large but also about love and joy in our community.
“Last year in 2024, we managed to help 200 families with food hampers and clothes, donated to Gwanda Old People’s Home and Kip Keino Children’s Home, and we even paid school fees for six children from various schools.
That was a big success for us as council, and this year we want to do more. Our target for 2025 is 250 families and more children supported with school fees,” he said.
Alderman Moyo said a Mayor’s Cheer Fund Dinner will be held on November 27 with a target to raise US$10,000.
He added that, in addition to resources mobilised for the festive season, a new initiative will see resources being gathered for the underprivileged throughout the year.
He said this will also help inculcate a culture of giving beyond the festive holiday.
“Christmas is a time of festivity and to be merry, but unfortunately some don’t get to enjoy this feeling because of financial constraints. We have to do something as stakeholders from Gwanda to bring cheer to our community.
“The fund seeks to support those in need within the community, and I urge everyone to come on board in the spirit of giving. We are targeting vulnerable groups such as orphans, widows, the elderly, and people with disabilities,” he said.
Alderman Moyo pleaded with the community to open their hearts and assist the aged, needy, orphans, and vulnerable children in any way possible. He said social responsibility lies with every member of society and should not be reserved only for business players.
Gwanda Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund chairperson, Mr Methuseli Moyo, said this year they have cast the net wide in order to reach as many people as possible. He noted that people often assume donating is reserved only for entrepreneurs, while every member of the community can make a donation that could have a significant impact.
Mr Moyo said containers will be placed strategically in shops to motivate people to give.
