GWANDA MUNICIPALITY has partnered with private stakeholders to upgrade its ageing water and sewer reticulation infrastructure, which has become severely dilapidated, resulting in frequent sewage overflows and water pipe bursts that have inconvenienced residents.

Constrained by low revenue inflows, the local authority has struggled to maintain the system, prompting it to seek alternative solutions to improve service delivery. In a show of support, Inkazimulo Enterprises recently donated a sewer pump to the municipality, marking the beginning of the partnership initiative.

The pump is expected to ease the town’s sewer management challenges, enabling the local authority to effectively pump and manage waste, thereby significantly enhancing service delivery.

Gwanda Mayor, Alderman Thulani Moyo, expressed gratitude for the donation, stating that it supports the council’s mandate under President Mnangagwa’s call to action for improved service delivery.

“As a council, we have been struggling to maintain our water and sewer reticulation system, which has had a serious impact on service delivery. Although we have not been recording significant cash inflows, His Excellency President Mnangagwa has made a clear Call for Action: ‘No compromise to service delivery,’ and this directive has pushed us to explore partnerships such as this one,” he said.

Alderman Moyo noted that the donation not only addresses an immediate need but also highlights the importance of collaboration and corporate social responsibility.

“As Gwanda Town continues to navigate sewer system challenges, this support from Inkazimulo Enterprises will go a long way in building a healthier, more sustainable community for our residents. Council will continue pursuing partnerships that bring lasting solutions,” he said.

Inkazimulo Enterprises Managing Director, Mr Kotsi Mokoele Ndlovu, said the company stepped in as part of its commitment to giving back to the community through corporate social responsibility.

“Upon learning of Gwanda Town’s sewage struggles through a call from the mayor, we felt compelled to act. We donated the sewer pump to help alleviate the challenges. This goes beyond a once-off donation; it reflects our long-term commitment to supporting service delivery and sustainable development in our town,” said Mr           Ndlovu.

Mr Ndlovu said that this is the first of many interventions to come from the company as it strengthens ties with the community and supports local infrastructure development.

“We recognise our responsibility to work alongside the municipality in addressing critical challenges. Improving Gwanda’s infrastructure is not just a municipal duty, but a shared responsibility,” he said. — @DubeMatutu
