PLANS are underway for the introduction of a private ward at the Gwanda Provincial Hospital, the Matabeleland South Provincial medical director Dr William Busumani has said.In an interview, Dr Busumani said the plans were at an advanced stage.

He said a proposal was submitted to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care Dr Gerald Gwinji last month and they were awaiting  approval.

“We want to introduce a private ward but we are still in the initial stages. We submitted our proposal last month and we are currently awaiting a response from the Permanent Secretary,” he said.

Dr Busumani said Gwanda Provincial Hospital needed a private ward to cater for patients who needed private attention. He said other provincial hospitals had private wards while Gwanda Provincial Hospital was the exception.

“All other provincial hospitals have private wards and we feel we have people in Gwanda who are in need of private attention. We have since identified the ward that we are going to convert to a private ward,” he said.

Some patients from Gwanda presently are forced to travel as far as Bulawayo to seek private medical attention.
