Gwanda road accident leaves one dead, six injured

A 19-YEAR-OLD teenager died while six other people were injured when a Honda Fit vehicle collided with a pickup truck in Gwanda.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Chiratidzo Dube confirmed the incident, which occurred on Tuesday at around 5PM at the 116 km peg along Old Bulawayo-Gwanda Road near Vumba Chigwe Mine area.

“Aleck Mpofu was driving a black Honda Fit due east towards Gwanda along Old Bulawayo-Gwanda Road with four passengers on board, while Mr Pride Mashavave was driving a white Nissan hardboard due west with one passenger on board towards Blanket Mine.

“Upon reaching the 116 km peg Mpofu encroached onto the lane of oncoming vehicles, which resulted in a head-on collision with the other vehicle. As a result of the accident, the seven people were injured and taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital. One of the injured Connerd Taruvinga aged 19 years from Spitzkop area succumbed to head injuries,” she said.

Insp Dube said the matter was reported to the police, who attended the scene. She said investigations were underway.
She urged motorists to adhere to road regulations to minimise loss of life.
