Gwanda woman sentenced to community service for drug possession

A 42-year-old woman – Debra Nyathi from Magedleni Village in Gwanda has been sentenced to perform 210 hours of community service after she was convicted of unlawful possession of drugs.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA), Nyathi was intercepted by police on February 12, 2025, while traveling on a bus that had just arrived from South Africa.
The incident occurred along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Road, where a diligent team from the National Anti-Smuggling unit was conducting routine checks.
During the search, they discovered two sacks filled with 599 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup hidden within the bus.
Upon investigation, Nyathi immediately admitted ownership of the contraband, leading to her arrest.
The confiscated cough syrup was taken to Gwanda Hospital for expert analysis, resulting in a Pharmacist Affidavit confirming the nature of the substances.
Nyathi faced the court and was sentenced to 12 months in prison, six suspended on condition she performed 210 hours of community service at Magedleni Primary School.
The contraband was forfeited to the State for destruction.
